2012 Annual Meeting focuses on ‘Water in our World’
New Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham welcomes the Carolina Women's Leadership Council to the Blue Zone on March 1.
After an optional tour of this beautiful facility, and a quick hello from new Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham, the meeting began with welcoming remarks from Council Co-Chair Drucie French. Then Julia Grumbles and Sarah Carey came forward to present this year’s Faculty Mentoring Awards. (See our Featured Women story!) Co-chair Molly Froelich then set the stage for the theme of the meeting.
The theme of the day was “Water in our World.” We heard several presentations by members of the UNC Water Institute, led by Jamie Bartram. Carolina has just announced water as a major academic theme for the next two years, and is a key part of a nationwide group that aims to solve water problems around the globe. The day concluded with a lovely cocktail party at the home of Becky Cobey, and many attendees brought their Carolina student for others to meet. Thanks to Becky for having us, and thanks to all who worked very hard to organize and host this year’s meeting.
The Carolina Women’s Leadership Council hopes to establish an endowment to generate funds to support a Fellowship at the Water Institute. The fellowship will aim to support a student of extraordinary promise to obtain a graduate degree at the UNC Gillings School of Public Health. While at studying at Carolina, the Fellow will work on a project with the Water Institute to tackle a priority issue related to women and water. For example: hygiene at birth, child development and women entrepreneurs.
For information about supporting this fellowship please contact Lanier Brown May at lanier_may@unc.edu.
